Is van life right for you?

Have you ever wanted to simplify your life so you can spend time doing what you love with the people you love? Well, we have done just that and now we are heading off on the adventure of a lifetime with our 3 yr old in tow.

That’s right - we live (by choice) in a van with our 3 year old daughter. I know this lifestyle isn’t for everyone but it works for us. In 2019 we bought an empty cargo van and self converted it into our home on wheels called ‘OLLI’. We have all the comforts of home but the flexibility to move around. Our living space might be small but out backyard is enormous and ever changing.

My favourite question Nyah asks is “Mum where are we today”. I must admit at first I felt massive mum guilt as I thought that she was craving consistency and a stable place to ‘live’ but I soon realised she was genuinely excited to peek out the window and see where we were each day. I mean we all know kids like adventures and Nyah’s life is one big adventure.

We have been living in the van for just over 6 months now and whilst it was a big adjustment from our previous life we love it. #vanlife is different to living in a house but many things are the same. We still have daily chores like laundry, cooking, cleaning and our 3 year old still has meltdowns and a thousand toys. The difference is I can clean my house in around 4 minutes and cooking doesn't seem that bad when your parked up at your favourite beach. This simple lifestyle leaves us with alot of extra time to do the things we love together as a #family.

We have always been explorers and spend most of our time outdoors however, it is so easy to get stuck in the ‘routine’ of life. When we lived in our house I found that I would wake up - get myself and Nyah ready for the day, drop her to kindy, work all day, pick her up and head straight home for dinner, bath and bedtime (sound familiar?). Well when you live on the road we still have our morning routine and work to do but once we are done we head straight to the beach or the park. This lifestyle has forced us to change our routine and spend more time together playing outside and I LOVE it.

So when people ask us why we choose to #travel with our small child, we say WHY NOT?

When you think about your life what would you change?
