2 weeks in Alice Springs with kids

Updated: May 4, 2021

If you, like me thought that there wasn't much to do with kids in the middle of Australia think again. Alice Springs is a remote town in the Northern Territory, halfway between Darwin and Adelaide and surprisingly has a-lot to offer families.

When we first came though Alice Springs we thought of it as a drive through town and only stopped over for a night to sleep, fill the tank and re stock on food before heading down the Uluru. Well, only a month later we happened to find ourselves back in Alice but this time we stayed a little longer and explored. To my surprise there is quite a-lot to do and see here in Alice Springs from hiking in the East and West MacDonnell Ranges to visiting the school of Air in town. We were also lucky enough to be in town during Parrtjima which is an annual light festival held in the MacDonnell Ranges.

The best place to stay in town is the Big 4. It is centrally located, well kept and so much fun. As far as kids activities they have everything; playgrounds, jumping pillows, arcade, tv room, go karts and 3 swimming pools and an awesome water slide. For us the best part of the Big 4 has been to social element. The park is always full of kids and so Nyah made so many friends. When you travel with an only child meeting other kids is a MUST. They also have awesome deals like stay 7 pay 5 available online. Check out our vlog on our time at the BIG below.

Now Alice Springs is only a 3 to 4 hour drive to both Uluru and Kings Canyon which are both incredible must see destinations but before you jump in the car and head down there be sure to check out;

The Telegraph Station

ANZAC Hill

Ellery Creek

Ormiston Gorge

Glen Hellen Gorge (it's currently closed)

Finke Gorge

There is plenty more to do and see including multiple indigenous art galleries and I hear a local football match is a must.

We had planned to spend a few days in Alice Springs and it turned into 2 week. We are so glad we stopped to discover what this cute little town has to offer and we hope you stop in to!

Edit: Since sharing our adventures in Alice Springs online we received a lot of questions in regards to safety in Alice. It makes me a little sad that many towns get a bad rap online. A huge part of why we are traveling Australia is to explore every town and make our own judgement. If we were to listen to every bad review we have read we would have missed out on some of our favourite adventures. I do read reviews on places but I take them with a grain of salt.
