Our original plan was to spend one month in Malaysia, however once we arrived we were a little shocked by how expensive it was. In relation to Australia it was still cheaper but we thought that it would be more comparable to the other countries we have recently visited. With that being said, here is our complete breakdown of exactly what we spent in 13 days in Malaysia.
Accommodation: $453.14
Things to consider: we found accommodation hard in Malaysia. There wasn’t a lot of choice in the budget sector and we found that they were often dirty or smelt bad. My advice is to read as many recent reviews as possible or even check the place out before booking.
Food: $615.73
Things to consider: food bills can vary a lot depending on whether you are eating at street vendors or restaurants. Our food bill also includes alcohol.
Experiences: $233.45
Things to consider: Our daughter celebrated her 6th birthday in Malaysia so we made sure to take her to a few different kid related attractions.
Travel: $334.51
Things to consider: This price does not include our flights. It is taxis and bus fares. We caught the bus from Kuala Lumpur to the far north to visit Langkawi Island.
Laundry: $16.20
Things to consider: This covered 2 loads of laundry.
Shopping: $92.05
Things to consider: this covered all our daughters birthday gifts plus a few random items.
Flights: $379.67
Things to consider: We are a family of 3 and we always book the cheapest flight available. This flight was from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur.
That brings our grand total for 13 days of holidaying in Malaysia to $2124.75. We came in $215.25 under budget which was a shock to us. We knew Singapore was going to be expensive but we thought Malaysia would be more similar to the rest of SE Asia.
We loved Kuala Lumpur, it is a beautiful city but honestly didn’t love the rest of Malaysia. I feel like things were struggling since the pandemic and only just opening back up so we will definitely be back to explore more one day.
