How we turned our van into a home

When we first told people we were going to live full time in a van you can imagine the looks we got. But what most people didn’t realise is that not only did we build a tiny house inside our van but we created a home. Our home has all the creature comforts we need it’s just a lot smaller than a traditional home.

When we were first designing our van I thought we didn’t need certain things like an oven or a washing machine but now that we have lived on the road for over a year let me tell you it’s these little things that make all the difference. Sure we don’t NEED them but they sure make living on the road a little bit easier.

For the first year we didn’t have a washing machine so therefore spent hours upon hours hanging out in random laundromats and let me tell you that’s no fun with a young kid. But thanks to Companion our washing machine is now one of my most prized possessions. Honestly I never thought I’d say I look forward to laundry day!

It’s the little things like the family photos on the wall that make this place feel like home but nothing makes a house smell like home more than cookies baking in the over, am I right? Once again our oven is what I like to call a luxury but now that we are choosing to live in our van long term it is important to me to have access to everything would have in a traditional kitchen.

The planning stages of a van build are by far the most important. It crucial that you are 100% in love with your final layout before you start. We are first time van builders so of course we have learnt things along the way but honestly the only thing I would change about our tiny home (who knows we might do a little upgrade one day) would be adding an indoor shower. Originally our travel plans were for a year at most and we planned to hang around coastline and pretty much be beach bums so therefore an outdoor beach styled shower would be perfect. Our plans have evolved over time and recently we have been longing for an indoor shower, especially on those colder mornings.

Im always amazed by how much you can do with such a tiny space and I love meeting other van lifers to see how they have decorated their van. Do you think you could live in such a small space?

Hi. I watched you guys capturing the amazing sunset at Yallingup last night and decided to contact you about your van. Being able to travel especially with your daughter is an awesome experience and you should be congratulated for making it work. I'm in the planning stages of a van fit out so I am really interested in your story. Again. Well done to the three of you and best wishes for the future. I'm a professional photographer and If you'd like to see some of my images, check out mikewhite999 on Instagram. Last nights sunset is there also. :-)
