Please note the following prices are in Australian dollars and for a family of 3.
We are a family of Three travelling the world with no end date in sight on a budget of $180AUD/day. Is it possible to travel the world on such a small budget? Who knows but well give it a crack.
With that being said, here is our complete 28 day breakdown of exactly what we spent in Thailand.
Accommodation: $477.87
Things to consider: when we are staying in nicer resorts we are typically collaborating with them and paying out of pocket. This is a great way for us to indulge in some luxury without busting the budget. We found accommodation to be more expensive in Thailand compared to Vietnam however we did 8 nights in complimentary (work) stays which helped to keep our total cost down.
Food: $1103.95
Things to consider: food bills can vary a lot depending on whether you are eating at street vendors or restaurants. We found that we spent on average $ per meal for the three of us. Once again we kept this total down by having 8 days of complimentary mels included in our resort work stay. Our food bill also includes alcohol.
Experiences: $705.93
Things to consider: we are not big tour people, we much prefer to explore a place ourselves, however, we did splurge on a few tours/activities here in Thailand. We did a jetski island hopping tour, an Elephant rescue tour and a snorkelling tour.
Travel: $521.16
Things to consider: This price does not include our flights. It is motorbike rental, taxis and an overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang mai.
Laundry: $17.01
Things to consider: We did laundry twice in 30 days and it was $7-$10 each time. Laundry is based on weight so obviously it will depend on how much clothing you are washing.
Shopping: $279.13
Things to consider: This covers our phone sim card which was around $25 for 30g data. We only got one sim as we are always together and there is wifi everywhere.
Bank Fees: $0
Things to consider: We bank with ING so we do NOT incur any international fees for using our card and we receive 4 free ATM withdrawals per month and after that it is $5.
Flights: $773.64
Things to consider: We are a family of 3 and we always book the cheapest flight available and this covered flights from Ho Chi Minh to Bangkok and from Chiang mai to Phuket.
Visa: $0
There is no visa cost for Australians or Americans entering Thailand for 30 days.
Medical: $812.09
Things to consider: Spencer had a tooth extracted ($55.13) and Nyah got bit by a monkey and needed to have her rabies jabs. The cost of the hospital trip plus her first 2 rabies jabs is $756.96 but we are lodging a travel insurance claim so we wont add this to our total and will update once the case is complete.
That brings our grand total for 28 days of travelling in Thailand to $3933.82. We are $1,106.18 under budget (based on $180/day budget) which is awesome and will definitely help when we visit some of the more expensive countries.
